Fitness assessment

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a fitness assessment. The last times were in 2002 and 2004. So, here we are, about 10 years on from the first one. Let’s compare today’s results with history. Today  2004 2002 Weight 79.5 Kg 99.08 Kg 111.25 Kg Height 174 176 173 Blood pressure 135/80 — 150/90 Resting pulse

Running history

I’ve been looking at my ongoing run performance. In particular, I’ve been looking at how much (volume) of running I’ve done. The following graph shows my last three years of running, on a month-by-month basis. It’s quite interesting to see the peaks and troughs. You can generally see I’ve become more meticulous in tracking the

VO2 max

If you’re serious about training for a sport, it can be really helpful to know you VO2 max and your lactate threshold. So, I’m off the University of Auckland’s “Health and Performance Clinic”. They are doing a special (until 1 March 2012), whereby you can get either test done for just $50 (the price of

Run less, run faster

I’m a fan of the FIRST “Run less, run faster” programme. So, I’ve cobbled together a spreadsheet that does most of the heavy lifting in terms of working out the timings that one needs to do. Just change the yellow cell to reflect your 5K race pace (that you have/can actually achieve). For a brief(ish) summary

It’s all downhill (not)

My goal was to break 1:35:00, and whilst this is a new personal record, I didn’t achieve that goal. But don’t get me wrong, it was fun. So, why do I think I missed my target. It would be easy (but wrong) to blame my performance on the fact that the organisers promised a coffee cart

Auckland marathon 2011

A new marathon personal record (PR)  of 3:43:55 . In hindsight I probably made the rookie mistake of going out too fast at the start of the race … I was certainly telling myself that around the 30k mark (where I found it increasingly hard to hit my target pace). It was great to see

Walk for Isobella and EB

I’m running the Auckland Marathon on Sunday. I’m looking forward to it, and it should be fun. A few weeks later, I’ll be in Kerikeri running the KeriKeri half marathon. I’m doing the run at KeriKeri to raise awareness about Epidermylosis Bullosa and to raise money for debra New Zealand, a support group for sufferers

RUN Auckland

I never got around to completing my posts on RUN Auckland. Overall, and despite only completing five out of the six races, I was fourth in my age group. I regard that as quite an achievement since I’ve only really been running a year. My times were: 00:48:32 — Remuera 00:48:49 — Te Atatu 00:47:59 — Bucklands Beach

North Shore marathon

Today was the North Shore marathon. My overall time was 4:03:09 which placed me 48th overall and almost exact one hour behind the best in my age group (3:03:40). I guess I have a bit of training to do yet. The race was harder than I expected. I hadn’t studied the route to well, and so

Run Auckland: Race 3

Sunday was the fourth race in the RUN Auckland series at Northcote (I seem to have skipped reporting on the third race in the series). My summary of the course is that what wasn’t muddy was hilly. I don’t mind the mud, but the hills … Anyway, after this race, I’m surprised at how good

Huntly Half

Did I mention I did the Huntly half marathon. Did I mention that it was a new personal best time? Did I mention that it gave me a qualifying time for the New York marathon next year? Well it’s all true.

Run Auckland: Race 2

Sunday was the second race in the Run Auckland series. This time it was at Te Atatu. The first lap, of 5K, I pretty much match my time for the first run in the series. However, I slowed down alot in the second lap. I wonder how much that was because (a) I had been
